Created in 1995, Metro Family is an original collage by Winston Smith featuring a cheerful, picture-perfect family strolling across a towering cityscape. Taken from the sunny world of vintage advertising, the family seems blissfully unaware of the strange landscape they're walking through.
The piece was published on the cover of Utne Reader, May–June 1995 (Issue No. 69), accompanying the feature “After Work,” which explored the future of employment and the possibility of a world less dependent on traditional jobs.
This is the actual, one-of-a-kind original artwork used for the magazine cover, not a print or reproduction. The original composition is particularly interesting alongside the published cover, showing how Winston's artwork was adapted for the magazine's final layout.
